San Diego Wedding Photographer, Principle - Mark Hillis

Although Mark was interested in the arts from an early age, his exposure to photography did not come until 1990 when he took his first photojournalism class at Northern Arizona University.  Three years later he graduated Summa Cum Laude and went on to enter the professional photography world.

Mark's professional photography career began in 1993 when he starting working for one of the top commercial photographers in Phoenix. Through this experience he learned the intriquicies of lighting and composition that only comes from living photography day in and day out. Mark worked on everything from location shoots in the mountains with real-life cowboys to large-scale photo shoots for major advertising agencies and corporations (such as GMC, Pepsi, Honeywell, Petco, PetSmart, Intel, Motorola, Hilton and Doubletree Hotels- just to name a few). By working in the commercial photography environment as well as doing weddings, Mark brings a knowledge of lighting and composition, as well as a technical knowledge of cameras, digital technology and optics that very few wedding photographers bring to the table.

Mark has 14 years of professional digital imaging experience as well. His knowledge of digital photography began in 1995 when he began shooting commercial assignments with one of the first studio digital cameras. Back then, cameras like this were $50,000+, and few photographers had the chance to use them. By having this early exposure to digital and software like Photoshop, Mark has a digital foundation and knowledge that has actually affected his approach in ways one might not expect- a love for film as well! Mark believes there are strengths in digital for sure, but film still has strengths in its tonalities and its rendition of subtle colors and skin tones that just can't be achieved with the digital cameras on the market today. If you have a love for film as well, Mark will be happy to incorporate that into your package.

As of 2009, Mark has owned an operated Unveiled Wedding Photography in San Diego for 11 years, and has shot over 500 weddings himself. He is a seasoned professional wedding photographer in San Diego with a solid technical background, a love for photography in all aspects, and a work ethic in which he expects nothing but the best from himself and his team on each and every wedding he photographs. Mark uses professional gear- high quality cameras and professional lenses that deliver exceptional imagery (See FAQs for more on this). While equipment is important, Mark believes that it's a photographer's vision, compositional skills, and passion that can make another photographer's coverage under the same circumstances pale by comparison.

Mark's artistic compositions have caught the eye of many in the photographic field, and his work has been seen throughout the country in publications such as: San Diego Bride and Groom, Photo District News, Digital Fine Art Magazine, Digital Imaging Magazine, San Diego Union Tribune, Fox News, 10 News A List.

Rob, Associate Photographer:

Rob made his way to the west coast in 2002 and joined the team at Unveiled after living the first chapters of his life across the country in New York. Rob's passion for photography began in high school where he spent countless hours in the darkroom perfecting images that many would have deemed finished.Rob then went on to get a degree in photography from New York's famous School of Visual Arts. He then honed his compositional skills as a true photojournalist by capturing moments in and around NY, shooting candids on the street, capturing life in NY only as a New Yorker would see it, and also by shooting weddings.

Rob brings a high level of perfectionism to his weddings, of which he has shot close to 150.  He effortlessly finds compositions that many photographers would never see in the same situation. His years of street photography bring an edge and a flavor to his weddings as well. Don't hire Rob because you want standard or typical wedding images- hire him because you want something different and because you like the aesthetic nature of his coverage that can only be described visually by seeing his images.

Steve, Associate Photographer:

Before moving to California in 2001, Steve worked at a portrait studio in his home state of Pennsylvania. Presently, as the manager of one of the largest photo stores in San Diego, Steve is around photography on a daily basis, and has an 8 year background with hands-on photographic experience as well. Steve enjoys finding different perspectives with his camera, whether it be by using a very unique lens, or by positioning himself up high or down low. His friendly disposition and calm demeanor puts people at ease, and his creative eye captures each wedding in a unique way.
